Courage to Write – Where to get it?

This story is about how I started writing what I have written so far. It might sound cliche, but the truth is that I have been writing since my school days. However, that stuff does not make any sense to me no more.  It was about birds, moon and my school experiences. For obvious reasons, things I wrote earlier are like a vague interpretation of reality and sometimes far away from the reality.  Just like many of us, I kept all my writings under a lock far away from anyone’s eye. I did not have the courage to write freely. Well, there were two main reasons which were keeping me from freely writing my thoughts. First, I thought I am not an expert and have no knowledge of literature or professional writing. I used to think that only experts get to write, silly me; how do they become experts, though! I believed that I need to get some training to take my writing to the next level. Second reason was hope for the good future, and I thought one day I can turn my stones into diamonds. Because of my near to death experience, now I think all these words will become useless one day (actually, they already are once they lose their meanings). I have learned these words and languages here (world), and I would leave them behind in this world. When I arrive at my next destination, I will have to learn a new language to communicate. Or even if I am born on this earth again, still I will not remember anything from the past. After applying this logic and a lot of self -talking I finally decide to write freely and connect with others who are looking for something else in life, something bigger than material possessions, something more valuable than writing credentials. Hence I started my journey along with all the travelers of life on the road of self-awareness.  Why for my whole life, I should keep collecting these stones. Regarding waiting for perfection in writings, a Buddhist story inspired me…

A traveler asked a monk leader to explain the meaning of an old scripture. The monk leader said to the traveler that he could not read, but if you read it to me, I would explain the meaning. The passenger asked him that if he could not read the words, how could he explain their meaning. Monk answered it by using an example of pointing a finger towards the moon. The purpose of pointing a finger to the moon is to see the moon. It does not matter if you focus on the finger, or finger had so many flaws, the focus should be on the moon not on the finger. The idea is to look into the direction of the moon. Some people will only look at the finger and will try to find good or bad things about it without realizing the purpose of it. And very few people will look at the moon.

Same thing, words are just a mean to reach the real meaning. They become useless when you understand the meaning. Just take an example of theories and concepts we have learned in the school. Do we exactly remember how those theories were said? Or now we know the meaning of them, so we don’t have to remember the exact words. All religious books are talking about same things – God, love, humanity, service, charity, etc. The way of saying these things are different and that’s why now we have so many religions. Some religions will tell you to be good because of karma (what goes around come around), few will talk about heaven and hell, others will talk about sufferings in next birth. But what they are trying to teach us is to be good;  and what we are focusing on is words of karma, hell/heaven, and reincarnations.

So, this is how I decided to put up views by eliminating focus on words or language and aiming at the true meaning. I remember a quote written on my school’s wall “Thought is free”  Here I am, trying to write those free thoughts. So if you are in the same boat scribbling journals and waiting for the perfection, do not wait, love, time does not wait for anyone.

Write freely; I hope you will find your courage to write as I did.
