Getting charmed by the numbers in the form of material or people is a normal behavior. It takes a mindful thought and hence a shift of perspective “Don’t be quantitative.” It is about the quality, not quantity. You cannot accumulate life and measure it in a quantity. The happiness can’t be measured, neither the love nor the sadness. There are no boundaries except the ones we have in our mind. If you follow the path of quantity, you will only meet the discontentment on your way. Even in the spiritual journey, meditation is not milestones that you can keep collecting. Meditation is a way of being: you don’t pile it up, you cannot accumulate it, it is not wealth. It is the way you are.
Same goes for the people in your life. There was a time when having a big group of people was a cool thing to boost your sense of belongingness, then came a time when you started finding solace in the company of few. You detoxed your life from the concept of numbers and started appreciating the quality.
Remember in life, being happy does not take much. However, it has become a task next to impossible because of a continuous race of accumulation. Between you and your happiness, there stands your ego. The ego which is comparing yourself to others and telling you that you are not enough. Ego is nothing but a darkness. Ego is shifting your focus from quality to quantity. If you closely observe the things in life that give you happiness, you will start noticing how less dependent they are on quantity.
The greatness in life belongs to those who focus on the excellence.
